A patchy, bare backyard is one of those things that just nags at you. You look at it every day and think 'I'll get to it eventually' - but eventually never comes. That's exactly the kind of lawn we were working with here. Bare, compacted soil. No grass, no structure, no irrigation. Nothing to work with.

The first step was getting the ground right. Soil prep is the part nobody talks about, but it's what separates a lawn that lasts from one that struggles out of the gate. We tilled and graded the area to make sure water would move correctly, then laid a custom sprinkler irrigation system before a single piece of sod ever touched the ground. That's the order that matters.

Once the irrigation was dialed in, we installed Marathon sod - a popular choice in Southern California because it holds up well to heat and foot traffic while staying dense and green. You can see how tight and uniform the coverage came out. No gaps, no thin spots. Just clean, lush grass from edge to edge.

To tie everything together, we finished the border with a concrete curb. It creates a crisp separation between the lawn and the surrounding mulch beds, and it keeps everything where it belongs over time. Clean edges make the whole yard feel intentional. October is actually one of the better windows to get sod down - the heat backs off just enough for roots to establish without the stress of peak summer.

If your lawn is more dirt than grass right now, this is what a full renovation looks like from start to finish. Soil prep, irrigation, quality sod, and a finished edge. That's the complete package, and the difference speaks for itself.
